> Formal guidelines
1. General requirements
– Please use Microsoft Word and send your article both as a word- and a PDF-document.
– Font: Times New Roman, 11 pt, single spaced.
– Contributions are accepted in German, French, and English.
– If writing in German, please follow the new orthography according to the rules of the Duden (including abbreviations).
– Turn off hyphenation.
– Use italic typeface for emphasis and avoid underlining or bold print. In any case, stick to one style for emphasis.
– Foreign words and phrases should be italicised. Please note the following exceptions:
* Proper names and commonly used terms (e.g. the Fronde; Confrérie de la Passion; Théâtre du Marais) are not italicised.
* Latin expressions are not italicised if they have entered the English lexicon, such as qua, ad absurdum, de facto, etc.
2. Guidelines for articles
– The article title and author name should be aligned to centre. Use caps for the main title of the paper, no caps for the subtitle, and small caps for the contributor's name:

– Please summarize your article in an abstract in French. The abstract should not exceed 10–15 lines and should be placed at the beginning of your text. Use the French language setting of your word processing programme.
– Give your contact details (preferably your university address) at the end of the article, following the bibliography.
– Your paper should be followed by a bibliography that provides all primary and secondary sources that have been used. The guidelines for annotation are as follows: Name (small caps), First name, Title. Subtitle, place: publisher, year. (cf. paragraph 7 for details)
– Following a quotation, a short reference to the source should be given either in a footnote or in brackets: Name year, p. #.
– Option 1 (cf. the instructions for the bibliography in paragraph 7): in a footnote or in brackets in the running text according to the following example: Hempfer 1972, p. 18.
– Option 2 (cf. the instructions for the bibliography in paragraph 7):
a) in a footnote: Hempfer (1972, 18)
b) in the running text in brackets: (Hempfer 1972, 18); i. e. the brackets around the year are dropped.
3. Guidelines for reviews
– Please quote the work under review according to the bibliographical reference as given in the book review request:
First name Name (the latter in small caps), Title. Subtitle (Series name, No.), Place: Publisher, year, XVI + no. of pages.
– Reviews should be 1500–4000 words long.
– There is no bibliography following reviews. Please quote references in the footnotes according to the following model:
Name (small caps), First name, Title. Subtitle, Place: Publisher, year, page. (Further references may be given either in the footnotes or in brackets in the text: Name year, page.)
– Put your 'signature' at the end of your text: university affiliation left, first name and name (the latter in small caps) right.
4. Footnotes and footnote numbers
– Footnote numbers appear after the punctuation of the phrase or clause to which the note refers except if the footnote refers exclusively to a particular portion of that phrase or clause.
– The footnote text starts with a capital letter and ends with a period.
5. Abbreviations und typography
– Use a hard space (non-breaking space) between letters in abbreviations such as: e. g., et al., p. Chr., E. A. Müller, p. 44 f., vol. 2, p. 55 etc.
– Please note the difference between hyphens and dashes:
* Hyphen: e. g. "Hans-Jörg", "Bild- und Textdatei"
* (Long) dash: before and after insertions and to signify "[from] … to": e. g. pp. 34–37; vols. 3–6.
6. Zitate
– To mark quotations, please use left and right double quotes: " … ".
– For distancing yourself from the terminology used and for quotations in your own translation, use left and right single quotes: ' … '.
– All direct quotations need to be referenced. In reviews, it suffices to quote the work under review by indicating the page number in brackets.
* e.g.: Müller points to this fact himself: "We need to quote properly." (p. 8)
– Quotations which are longer than three lines should be printed without quotation marks and indented 1 cm on the left. They should be separated from the surrounding text by inserting a blank line before and after.
– Page numbers:
* Put "f." if you reference two subsequent pages: pp. 54–55 becomes 54 f.
* When referencing more pages, indicate both start and end page numbers: pp. 152–154.
* When referencing the same source in subsequent footnotes, write "ibid. p. 89". When referencing the exact same page in the same source, write "ibid.".
7. Bibliography
(please use small caps instead of all caps)
There are two appropriate options for writing the bibliography. Most importantly it has to be internally consistent. Please use preferably option 1 for literary contributions, option 2 for linguistic ones.
