About Woman's Art Journal

Published semiannually¡ªMay and November¡ªsince 1980, Woman's Art Journal continues to represent the interests of women and art worldwide. Our articles and reviews cover all areas of women in the visual arts, from antiquity to the present day. Each issue presents current research on a variety of topics, featuring "portraits" of women artists, "issues and insights," and discerning reviews of recent books and exhibition catalogues. Each article is well researched and clearly written. Our authors are international scholars in their fields. A typical 60-page issue contains 20-25 color plates and 25-35 black-and-white illustrations.

WAJ is indexed on all major art indexes and bibliographies, and is used as a supplementary text in many university courses on women and art. The journal is found in university and major libraries worldwide and in selected museum bookshops, including the Metropolitan (New York), Philadelphia, and Nelson-Atkins (Kansas City), and the National Museum of Women in the Arts (Washington, D.C.). The full text is also available in the electronic versions of the Art Index and through JSTOR’s Arts & Sciences III Collection.

GUIDELINES FOR CONTRIBUTORS TO WOMAN'S ART JOURNAL

EDITORIAL POLICIES:
WAJ, a semiannual periodical published in May and November, addresses women's art heritage and contemporary issues as they relate to women. Articles on individual women should focus on the subject's life as well as her work and should include comments about how matters of gender affected her life and work. Contributors receive five copies of the issue in which their article appears. WAJ is supported primarily by subscription sales. Authors are urged to subscribe to WAJ and to ask their institutions and colleagues to do the same. No material previously published in the English language will be accepted for publication. If an article has previously been published in another language, that information must be supplied. Requests to reproduce articles for classroom use are fulfilled unless the author indicates otherwise.

Articles are considered for publication in the order in which they are received.

Portraits: Authors examine the lives and works of women in all areas of the visual arts-"fine" artists and artisans, designers, art historians and critics, museum curators and gallery directors, patrons, photographers, architects, filmmakers, etc.-either contemporary or from the remote or recent past. Manuscripts should be about 15 pages, plus endnotes, in the specified format.
Reviews: WAJ encourages honest criticism. Depending on the book, reviews are usually 5 to 10 pages long, in the specified format. Reviewers receive 2 to 4 copies of the issue in which their review appears, depending on the number of books reviewed.
