Instructions to Authors

Manuscript Submission and Editorial Correspondence

Western Folklore, despite its name, welcomes contributions dealing with folklore and folklife around the world, not just with America's western states. Western Folklore also welcomes submissions from all fields, not just the folklore profession, as long as as they deal substantively with folklore. Authors are responsible for the content of their articles.

Submissions Format: Western Folklore follows the format of the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition, chapter 16. A brief guide to citation style may be found at the Ohio State University Libraries' link, www.lib.ohio-state.edu/guides/chicagogd.html.

Works Cited entries should contain author, year, title, volume, and page numbers for articles. Examples of these for a book, an article, a chapter or an essay in an edited book, and a dissertation are as follows:

Herskovits, Melville. 1937. Life in a Haitian Valley. New York: Alfred Knopf.

Simons, Elizabeth Radin. 1986. The NASA Joke Cycle: The Astronauts and the Teacher. Western Folklore     45:261-277.

Lloyd, Timothy C. 1995. Folklore, Foodways, and the Supernatural. In Out of the Ordinary: Folklore and the Supernatural, edited by Barbara Walker. Logan, Utah: Utah State University Press.

Hall, Jonathan. 1984. The Dynamics of Oral Tradition. Ph.D. diss., The Ohio State University.

Author-Date citations are used parenthetically, e.g. (Herskovits 1937:25), in both the text and in any notes. Substantive notes are welcome, but are to be in conformity with the main text with regard to bibliographical citation. Authors are asked to avoid gender-specific language in their contributions.

Photographs: The editors will be happy to consider photographic material accompanying your paper. Please limit your photo selection to four or five, and make sure that they are at 300 dpi density at 5 inches width. Please do not try to fix photographs to correspond to these requirements, for example by resizing in PhotoShop. Indicate clearly in the body of your paper where they are to go by inserting a separate paragraph in square brackets indicating which photo or photos should be included, such as: [Photo 1 should go about here].

The order of assembly is text, notes, and works cited. Please note that if your submission is accepted, you will be asked to provide an electronic copy of your essay on a PC formatted floppy disk or CD-ROM.

Electronic format for manuscripts submitted to Western Folklore is greatly preferred. Submissions should be in Word (.doc) or rich text (.rtf) format, double-spaced throughout, including all quotations, notes, and bibliographical references. Paper submissions are also accepted, and must be submitted in triplicate (original and two copies) on standard size white paper, also double-spaced. Paper manuscripts, disks, and CDs will be returned only if accompanied by return postage (loose stamps); submissions from outside North America should be accompanied by return postage in the form of international reply coupons.
