About the journal

Westerly 58.2 Cover

About

Since 1956, Westerly has been publishing lively fiction and poetry as well as intelligent articles.

The magazine has always sought to provide a Western Australian-based voice, although its contributors and subject matter have never been geographically exclusive.  It covers literature and culture throughout the world, but maintains a special emphasis on Australia, particularly Western Australia, and the Asian region.

Westerly has a strong international reputation, being listed in all the world’s major cultural biographies and indexes, and has been instrumental in the careers of many of the regions most prominent and internationally renowned writers. These include major Western Australian writers such as Randolph Stow, Dorothy Hewett, T.A.G. Hungerford and Elizabeth Jolley; highly-awarded contemporary writers, including Tim Winton, Kim Scott, and Sally Morgan; and important local poets like John Kinsella, Tracy Ryan, John Mateer, and Lucy Dougan.

It is published at the Westerly Centre (formerly the Centre for Studies in Australian Literature) in English and Cultural Studies at the University of Western Australia, with assistance from the Western Australian State Government by an investment in the project through the Department of Culture and the Arts, and the Australian Federal Government through the Australia Council for the Arts.

The magazine is published twice a year in July and November, while the website publishes throughout the year.

Instructions to Authors

Style Guide

You should read the following information before submitting your work.

GeneralClick to hide

  • Westerly follows the current edition of the Modern Language Association (MLA) Handbook, using parenthetical documentation and a list of works cited.
  • Westerly uses endnotes, not footnotes. Endnotes should be used only where absolutely necessary.
  • Single inverted commas are used.
  • The name and contact details of the author, including postal address, should appear on a separate cover page.
  • Contributions should be saved as a Word file or an .rtf file.
  • Work should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration elsewhere.

IllustrationsClick to hide

If an illustration is to be used it should be scanned to a resolution of at least 300dpi at reproduction size and numbered (for example, author’s name no 3). It should be sent as a separate file. The place where the illustration is to be inserted in the body of the article should be marked , with the caption immediately following.

If the illustrations are not scanned, you should send the original numbered in a similar way

ParagraphsClick to hide

New paragraphs are denoted by indenting the first line. Do not insert line spaces between paragraphs.

SpellingClick to hide

In general, follow the Australian Government Printing Service style manual.

Use:

‘ise’ rather then ‘ize’
‘enquiry’ rather then ‘inquiry’
‘focuses’ rather then ‘focusses’
‘programme’ rather then ‘program’
retain the mute ‘e’ in ‘judgement’, ‘acknowledgement’,

CapitalsClick to hide

Keep the use of capitals to a minimum. Other than for proper names, use only when lower case would cause ambiguity.

AbbreviationsClick to show

The use of abbreviated titles in the text should be avoided.

Those in common usage (such as ABC, ACTU, ALP) are allowed (no stops). Lengthy titles can be reduced to a shortened form (whole words) after the first reference. The names of States (Victoria, South Australia, and so on) should not be shortened.

ContractionsClick to hide

Contractions (which are distinguished from abbreviations by the presence of the final letter) do not require stops, for example: ‘Dr’, ‘Mr’, and so on.

ItalicsClick to hide

All books, journals and film titles should be italicised, as well as names of ships. Foreign words in common usage (such as ‘elite’, ‘laissez faire’) need not be italicised. Song titles should not be italicised (for example ‘Auld Lang Syne’).
