About the journal

Transactions of the Philological Society continues the earlier Proceedings (1852-53), and is the oldest scholarly journal devoted to the general study of language and languages that has an unbroken tradition. Transactions continues to reflect the Society's long-standing interest in comparitive and historical linguistics in general and in Indo-European and the history of English in particular. Transactions also reflects the Society's broad range of interests and welcomes studies of all languages from the perspective of any of the various subdisciplines of descriptive and theoretical linguistics, including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics and sociolinguistics.

Instructions to Authors
Author Guidelines

Scholars are invited to submit papers for publication regardless of whether or not the papers have been read to meetings of the Society. Papers should be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/tphs. Full instructions and support are available on the site and a user ID and password can be obtained on the first visit. Support can be contacted by phone (+1 434 817 2040 ext. 167), e-mail (support@scholarone.com) or at http://mcv3support.custhelp.com. If you are not able to submit your paper online, please contact Dr. P. Rowlett, School of Languages, University of Salford, Salford M5 4WT.

Papers submitted for publication should be written so as to be accessible to a linguistic or philological readership in general and not addressed solely to specialists. When submitting an article, you will be asked to confirm that your submission is anonymous. You will be asked to submit a separate abstract, and to indicate any relevant key words. You will also be invited to indicate preferred and/or dispreferred reviewers. If relevant, footnote 1 should contain acknowledgements and reference to a presentation at a meeting of the Philological Society, or other meeting, etc. Submitted articles will normally be read by two reviewers. There is no restriction on the format of manuscripts when first submitted, although it would be helpful to both authors and editors if manuscripts follow the style of previous issues of the Journal, especially the References section. In particular, all languages normally written in non-Roman script (including Greek) should be cited in transliterated form; English translations and, where appropriate, word-for-word glosses should be provided for all examples and quotations. In the interests of clarity, contributors should try to relegate detailed evidence and technical argument to an appendix. Footnotes should be as few and as short as possible.

Tables, charts and diagrams (though not simple rules, examples or formulae) must each appear on a separate sheet, and must be labelled 'Fig 2', 'Table 4' or the like as appropriate. References in the text to the table or diagram should be made by citing this label.

Phonetic and phonemic transcriptions should make use of the symbols and conventions of the International Phonetic Alphabet. Any departures from IPA practice should be made explicit, and justified.

References in the text should be of the following forms: '...applies also to nouns (see Matthews 1981: 231-233)'; 'Rigter & Beukema (1985: 116) distinguish between... '.

Bibliographical references at the end should conform to the following models. (Mention one given name for each author, if you have the information; this aids readers following up your references in bibliographies, library catalogues, etc.)Title of periodicals should be given in full, or abbreviated as in Bibliographie Linguistique. Give place of publication and publisher for books.

Please note that signature of the Exclusive Licence Form does not affect ownership of copyright in the material. (Government employees need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright in such cases does not need to be assigned). After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various media/circumstances (please see the form for further details). To assist authors an appropriate form will be supplied by the editorial office. Alternatively, authors may like to download a copy of the form

NEW: Online production tracking is now available for your article through Blackwell's Author Services.
Author Services enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production. The author will receive an e-mail with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system. Please ensure that a complete e-mail address is provided when submitting the manuscript. Visit
www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.

Pre-submission English-language editing
Authors for whom English is a second language may choose to have their manuscript professionally edited before submission to improve the English. A list of independent suppliers of editing services can be found at
www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor/english_language.asp. All services are paid for and arranged by the author, and use of one of these services does not guarantee acceptance or preference for publication.
